Cruising is one of the most fun ways to enjoy a holiday and explore new destinations at your own pace without the hassle of packing and unpacking multiple times.

So, if you are a first-time or newish cruiser, we know that even before you step foot on the gangway, you will need to make an important decision: what cabin should I choose?

Something we have learned from years of booking cruises and from sailing on them ourselves is that your cabin choice can shape how much you enjoy your holiday.

And before you default to whatever comes up first in the search results, here is what is worth thinking about.

What Types of Cabins Are Available on Board?

Starting from inside cabins through to owner’s suites, there are plenty of choices. So, which one works best for you?

Inside Cabin or Interior Cabin

Inside Cabins

If you are on a budget or do not mind spending most of your time enjoying the ship’s amenities, an inside cabin might be the way to go. These rooms are in the interior of the ship and have no windows, living up to the name “inside.”

Who should book inside cabins?

  • Budget-conscious cruisers who are okay without a view from their cabin.
  • Cruisers looking to keep costs down but still enjoy a comfortable stay.
  • Guests who plan to spend more time exploring the ship or on excursions rather than in their cabin.
What We Love   Worth Knowing
  • Affordably priced, making them a great option for those on a budget.
  • Typically offer the same amenities as other rooms, including comfortable beds, storage, and bathroom facilities.
  • Great for those who like to sleep in darkness without any daylight peeking through.
  • Access to the same ship amenities, entertainment, and destinations as passengers in more expensive cabins.
  • No natural light or windows in the cabin.
  • Might feel less spacious compared to higher-tier cabins.

Cruise Guru Tip: Some ships offer a Virtual Balcony stateroom, meaning you will have a digital ocean or port view from an inside cabin, giving you the feeling of sailing in a balcony without the price tag. Ask us which cruise line and ships offer this feature.

Oceanview Cabin

Oceanview Cabins

Oceanview cabins offer a window or porthole that lets you enjoy the sights from your room. These rooms are a great mid-tier option for anyone who wants to experience the ocean without breaking the bank.

Who should book Oceanview cabins?

  • Those who want a bit more light and views without upgrading to a balcony room.
  • Travellers are budget-conscious but want something nicer than an interior.
What We Love  Worth Knowing
  • Natural light fills the cabin, making it feel more open and airier.
  • Great for watching the scenery as you sail between destinations, especially during sunrises and sunsets.
  • Slightly more expensive than inside rooms but still affordable.
  • Ideal for the budget-conscious who may feel claustrophobic in an inside.
  • View blocked by lifeboats or other structural elements in some cabins.
  • Limited space compared to suites or higher-tier cabins.

Cruise Guru Tip: Oceanview cabins are typically positioned lower on a cruise ship, which can mean less motion and easier to sleep if seas get rough.

Balcony Cabin

Balcony Cabins

If you are after a bit more luxury and the freedom to step outside and enjoy the sea breeze whenever you want, a balcony cabin is the way to go. An amazing opportunity to enjoy beautiful sunsets and a quiet morning coffee from the luxury of your own private outdoor space.

For scenic itineraries such as the Kimberley, the Pacific Islands, Alaska and the Mediterranean coastline, a balcony transforms the experience. Watching the landscape change from your own private vantage point is one of those things that is hard to explain until you have done it.

Port or starboard side cabins will matter on a scenic cruise, especially if you are staying in a balcony cabin as one side may consistently be facing the scenery. Talk to our team to help you make an informed decision on your cabin location for your itinerary

Who should book balcony cabins?

  • Those who want a taste of luxury without splurging on a suite.
  • Guests who want privacy and the option to enjoy the outdoors directly from their cabin.
  • Couples, honeymooners, or anyone seeking a romantic, secluded space away from crowds.
What We Love  Worth Knowing
  • Private outdoor space with a direct view of the ocean, perfect for relaxing and watching the world go by.
  • Offers more space than an inside or Oceanview cabin, including additional seating and sometimes even a small table.
  • Morning and evening views make it ideal for guests who enjoy scenic cruising or want a quiet retreat.
  • Pricey compared to inside and Oceanview cabins.
  • Can feel a bit cramped for guests who prefer larger, more spacious rooms.
  • Can be obstructed.

Cruise Guru Tip: Not all balconies are made the same size. They could be standard, angled, extended or wraparound. Whilst some balconies can provide significantly more usable space, there may be a surcharge.

Suites

Suites

If you want a luxury experience and are willing to spend a little extra for the privilege, a suite is your best bet. Ranging from mini suites to owner’s suites, these rooms are the ultimate in cruise accommodation. Suites often come with expansive living areas, private balconies, luxury amenities, and VIP treatment.

Who should book suites?

  • Honeymooners, special occasion celebrators, or anyone looking for the finest experience on board.
  • Guests who want ample space, luxurious amenities, and exclusive access to areas like private lounges or concierge services.
What We Love  Worth Knowing
  • Spacious and often comes with a separate living area, larger bathrooms, and a private balcony.
  • Suites usually offer priority boarding, butler service, and access to exclusive ship areas.
  • Incredible views of the ocean from the comfort of your private balcony.
  • Usually the better views from the ship.
  • High price tag, making it less accessible for those on a budget.
  • Suites can sell out quickly, so it is important to book early.

Cruise Guru Tip: Think about what you want from your cruise. A suite costs more upfront, but it usually comes with benefits such as drinks packages, priority boarding and some specialty dining built into the fare. Add those separately in a lower cabin, and the price gap may not be as big as it first looks.

Interconnected or Family Room

Interconnecting Rooms or Family Cabins

For families or groups travelling together, many cruise lines offer family cabins or connecting rooms. These provide more space and comfort for families of all sizes.

Who should book interconnecting rooms?

  • Families or large groups who need more space to spread out.
  • Travellers with children who need extra amenities or the convenience of connecting rooms.
What We Love  Worth Knowing
  • More space to accommodate several people, including larger living areas and more storage.
  • Some family cabins come with extra amenities such as kids’ entertainment or additional bathrooms.
  • Higher cost than standard cabins, especially for larger families.
  • May still be confined compared to suites or balcony rooms.

Cruise Guru tip: Cabin choice matters when you are travelling with family. Some ships have cabins big enough to fit everyone in one space, so you will not need to worry about interconnecting rooms. Others do not, which means you need to book connecting cabins. Either way, the earlier you book, the better your chances of locking in the right space for your family.

What Cabin to Choose

What’s Your Ideal Cruise Cabin?

If you are all about value, an inside cabin gets you the same destinations for less.

Want a sea view without the splurge? Oceanview is your sweet spot.

After your own slice of the ocean each morning? Balcony is hard to beat.

Chasing space and indulgence? Suites deliver both.

And if you are travelling with the family, it is all about finding the setup that keeps everyone close without feeling cramped.

One more thing worth knowing: if you are not too fussed on the exact cabin but want to save where you can, ask us about booking a guarantee. You are guaranteed the grade you paid for, or better, so there is a chance of a free upgrade without paying for one.

Not sure where you land? That is what we are here for. Our Cruise Guru consultants have sailed on most of these ships themselves, so give us a call on 13 13 03 and we will help you find the right fit.
